We seem to hear about refugees every day – but how often do we stop and think of the children? It’s a terrifying experience at any age, but to leave your home and step into a world of uncertainty at such a young age is a different experience entirely. Especially children who have made the journey alone, either orphaned or with parents back in China.

That’s why we’ve launched school meals for the Uyghur refugees in Turkey, with incredible support from the Uygur Ilm Marifet Foundation (UIFM).

As their parents strive to make a new life, our school meals offer an opportunity for low-income families. We alleviate the financial burden by feeding their children for them, encouraging them to attend more regularly.

We’re offering them regular meals, valuable education and an opportunity to get their lives on track!

With 180 students between the Aybligi and Oku Uygur Schools, we’re astounded by your generous donations. In fact, we’re not collecting funds at the moment because we have more than enough to fund our initial phase.

But aside from getting much-needed nutrition, what are they learning?

As well as standard academic and religious subjects, they’re learning about their native Uyghur language and history. But, more importantly, they’re being taught the Turkish language and how to integrate as they grow up.

In between lessons, they munch on a range of different food: bread, salad, eggs, fruit, cheese, soup, rice, vegetables, chickpeas – everything they need for a healthy balanced diet to keep them learning!

We wish we could do more for them, but by offering nutritious, filling meals and a well-rounded education, this is the best option for both the children and their families.
