Major Wins in Malawi

We don’t just send over a bunch of money and leave teachers to get on with it – we get involved at every stage of the process. That’s why we travelled to Malawi in March, to see how their madrassas are doing.

Journeying through Blantyre, Mulanje, Zomba and Mangochi to visit 7 madrassas is a big job… But seeing the smiling faces of happy children hard at work made it all worth it!

During our trip, we inspected their facilities and observed the general impact, seeing the difference it made to the children, parents, imams and community around them.

Some madrassas need storerooms and kitchens, some need a better water system; others need more prayer mats, cups for wudhu, and extra classrooms to manage the increasing number of pupils – but these are all minor obstacles.

We’ve taken care of the biggest challenges already!

Before we came along, not many children were enrolled, and there were problems with punctuality, absenteeism, and academic performance. Things have changed…

Now, madrassas are seeing improved attendance, better punctuality and the children’s academic performance has substantially improved.

And the best thing? The enrolment rate in some madrassas has even doubled. The Zodec madrassa in Zomba, for example, has increased from 150 students to 310!

There may still be a lot of work to do, but the improvements we’ve seen are incredibly encouraging. A higher number of happier, healthier children getting an education is a huge win for both us and the community.
